About this house

Black Peak Retreat is an authentic timber high-country home in the heart of Ōmārama, perfectly placed for exploring Aoraki / Mount Cook, Lake Tekapo, the Lindis Pass and the wider Mackenzie Basin. Cycle directly onto the Alps 2 Ocean Trail, discover the Clay Cliffs and Ahuriri Valley, or enjoy the region's famous dark skies. Complimentary overnight EV charging, secure bike storage and a bike repair station make it an ideal base for families, cyclists and South Island adventurers.

Black Peak Retreat comfortably accommodates up to six guests across three bedrooms and features spacious open-plan living areas, a fully equipped kitchen, modern bathroom and sunny outdoor spaces.
Originally built more than 50 years ago, the home retains much of its original timber construction. Like many traditional timber homes, the timber naturally responds to changes in temperature and humidity. You may occasionally hear creaks, knocks or pops from the structure as it expands and contracts throughout the day and night.
You may also notice the occasional bead of natural timber sap on the ceiling, floor or furnishings. Some of the timber still releases small amounts of sap more than 50 years after construction. This is a natural characteristic of solid timber homes and part of the authentic character that makes Black Peak Retreat unique.

Guests have exclusive access to the entire home, outdoor living areas and off-street parking.
Complimentary EV charging, secure bike storage, e-bike charging facilities and the bike repair station are all available throughout your stay.

We're local hosts and live just a few minutes away. Check-in is self-service, but we're always available by phone or Airbnb message if you need assistance or local recommendations during your stay.
We're also happy to share our favourite swimming spots, scenic drives, walks, photography locations and local hidden gems.

Ōmārama is one of the South Island's best-kept secrets and an ideal base for exploring the Mackenzie Basin and Waitaki Valley without the crowds of larger tourist centres.
The combination of clear air, wide-open landscapes and dramatic mountain backdrops creates constantly changing colours and light throughout the day, making the area a favourite destination for photographers, artists, hikers and stargazers alike.
