Welcome to Collingwood! Our BusyINC HQ apartment places you in Melbourne’s coolest neighborhood – Smith Street was voted the coolest street in the world!
Enjoy a mix of historic charm and modern hipster vibes. Trendy cafes, brunch spots, art galleries and vintage shops are steps away. Don’t miss Collingwood Yards Arts Precinct and its famous Keith Haring mural.
By night, discover Collingwood’s vibrant dining and bar scene: craft breweries, global eateries (from Greek tavern feasts to vegan delights), and inclusive LGBTQIA+ friendly bars and clubs. Getting around is easy with trams at the door and the CBD just 10 minutes away. The MCG and sports precinct are a short train ride or a walk away, so you’re well set for game day. This stylish, diverse community will make you feel at home – we hope you love it as much as we do!
Trams:
The #86 tram line runs along Smith Street, right outside your door, and is one of the most convenient ways to reach the city.
Hop on a city-bound Tram 86 toward “Docklands” – it trundles down Smith St, through Fitzroy, and into the CBD via Bourke Street. In the other direction, the 86 can take you up to trendy Northcote and Thornbury.
Just two blocks south of the apartment, on Victoria Parade, you’ll also find trams #109 and #12. Tram 109 runs east-west, from Box Hill through the city to Port Melbourne, and Tram 12 runs to St Kilda. Between these, you can easily reach many significant areas. Trams are frequent and quintessentially Melbourne – enjoy the ride!
(Tip: All trams in Melbourne’s CBD can ride within the city's “Free Tram Zone.” If you take the 86 into the heart of downtown, you won’t need to touch on your ticket in the free zone. However, outside that zone – i.e. here in Collingwood – you’ll need a valid Myki transit card.)
Trains: The nearest suburban train station is Collingwood Station, approximately a 10-minute walk east of the apartment (head down Smith Street and turn onto Stanton Street or Wellington Street). Collingwood Station is on the Mernda/Hurstbridge line, with trains every 10-20 minutes.
It’s only a 5-minute ride on the 86 tram to Parliament Station, located on the edge of the CBD where you can connect to Flinders Street Station – Melbourne’s main train hub.
Buses: Several bus routes service Collingwood, filling in the gaps between tram lines. The most useful is the 246 buses on Hoddle Street (about a 5-7 minutes’ walk east), which runs north-south from Clifton Hill down to St Kilda via Richmond. This bus can take you to the MCG/Rod Laver Arena area (via Richmond) or down to the Chapel Street shopping precinct.
Another is the 200/207 bus on Johnston St, running west through Fitzroy to Carlton and the University of Melbourne or east to Kew. While trams and trains will cover most of your travels, buses are there if you need them.
Walking & Cycling: One of the perks of Collingwood is its walkability. Adjacent neighborhoods like Fitzroy, Carlton, Abbotsford, and East Melbourne are easily reachable on foot. For example, it’s about a 20-minute walk to the CBD's edge or the MCG. If you enjoy cycling, Melbourne has bike-share schemes and many dedicated bike lanes. You can ride from Collingwood into the city or along the Yarra River trails with relative ease.
Uber & Taxis: Rideshare services like Uber, and DiDi are widely available in Melbourne. From this location, you can typically get a car within 5 minutes. A trip to the central city normally costs around A$10–15, depending on the time of day. There’s also a taxi rank located near the corner of Smith Street and Gertrude Street. Rideshares are particularly convenient at night when trams slow down, or if you’re carrying shopping bags or luggage.
Transit Tips: Melbourne’s public transport operates on a stored-value card called Myki. You can purchase a Myki card from any train station and top it up with credit. Don’t forget to “touch on” and “touch off” on the card readers when boarding trains or buses (on trams, just touch on at the start). The same Myki card works for trams, trains, and buses throughout the entire city. Also, download the free “PTV” mobile app or use Google Maps for journey planning – real-time departures and route info will make your travels easy.
Collingwood is one of Melbourne’s oldest and most iconic suburbs. It is just 10 minutes from the MCG, Melbourne Park, Fitzroy Gardens, Epworth, and St Vincent’s Hospitals. It borders Fitzroy, Abbotsford, and the CBD, and there is easy tram access to Melbourne Uni, RMIT, and Federation Square. It's also a short tram ride from the Melbourne Airport SkyBus terminal at Southern Cross Station, making arrivals and departures easy.
Originally home to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, Collingwood became a working-class hub in the 1850s gold rush, filled with factories, breweries, and modest cottages. Today, it's a creative and inclusive neighbourhood known for its street art, heritage shopfronts, and vibrant LGBTQIA+ community.
Smith Street, recently named the “coolest street in the world,” is right on your doorstep—home to vintage stores, indie galleries, artisan cafés, and global eateries. Yet amid the trendiness, Collingwood still wears its history with pride, from elegant Victorian buildings to the beloved Collingwood Football Club (est. 1892).
