Onancock is one of Virginia's oldest towns, chartered in 1680, and one of the few places on the Eastern Shore where you can park the car and leave it there all weekend. You're in the historic district, a few blocks from the town wharf on Onancock Creek, where Chesapeake sunsets are the main event and the mail boat still runs out to Tangier Island.
Market Street is the spine of town: independent restaurants, art galleries, the Roseland Theatre, North Street Playhouse, and a farmers market in season. Ker Place, a 1799 Federal mansion museum, is a short walk. Rent a kayak and paddle the creek, or bike the flat back roads past soybean fields and waterfront villages.
Farther out: Chincoteague and Assateague's wild ponies and beaches are about an hour north, Cape Charles and the Bay Bridge-Tunnel 45 minutes south, and NASA Wallops rocket launches are sometimes visible from town on a clear night.
Bring a car. The Eastern Shore has no meaningful public transit for visitors, and rideshare is essentially nonexistent here — don't count on getting an Uber. Parking is free and easy: the house has a drive-way and on-street throughout town.
Once you're here, though, you may not need the car much. The historic district is flat and walkable, and Market Street's restaurants, galleries, and the wharf are all within a few blocks. The back roads are quiet and level, so biking is a genuinely good way to see the area.
Driving times: Route 13 is the main north-south artery and runs a few minutes east of town. Chincoteague is about an hour north, Cape Charles 45 minutes south, and Norfolk roughly 90 minutes via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (toll applies). Salisbury (SBY) is the closest commercial airport, about an hour north.
**Important:** To maintain the property's high standards, our third-party insurance provider, Truvi, will initiate a verification process post-booking. You will be offered two options for damage protection: a $35 damage waiver fee or a $15 fee plus a $500 deposit. This verification process must be completed, and the damage insurance settled before your arrival.
