Caboose

The caboose is a cozy, one-bedroom retreat with original railroad character and vintage details throughout. The living area includes a comfortable sitting space, gas fireplace, and kitchen, with sleeping accommodations for up to four guests — a maximum of 2 adults and 2 children. The bedroom is complete with a full size Premium Purple® mattress & Purple® pillows as well as a smart television and high speed wifi. The living room has a futon for extra sleeping space.

The Bathhouse
The private bathhouse is located just outside the caboose and includes a full bathroom with a deep soaking tub and shower. It is exclusively yours during your stay, but does require stepping outside to access.

The Setting
The caboose sits along Highway 61 in the Grand Marais lakeshore corridor, with Lake Superior just across the road. You’ll hear the passing vehicles, especially during the day, but you’re also perfectly positioned to explore the North Shore.

The Outdoors
A private patio provides space to be outside and enjoy the woods. Lake Superior shoreline access and hiking trails. Galleries, beaches, and downtown Grand Marais are all just 10 min away.

A Historic Stay
This is a historic railroad car, not a newly built cabin. The caboose is intentionally intimate and full of character, with some of the charming quirks that come with staying in a piece of railroad history. If you love places with a story, you’ll feel right at home here.

Located on Minnesota Highway 61 (North Shore Scenic Drive) within Grand Marais, the address is in the town’s lakeshore corridor. The area is known for lake views, Artist’s Point and the municipal harbor, art galleries and cafes, easy access to shoreline trails and beaches, and quick drives to Judge C. R. Magney State Park, Kadunce falls and nearby hiking/biking trailheads. The vibe is small, arts-focused, outdoors-oriented, and seasonal (busiest late spring–early fall).

Car: Highly recommended and most convenient; Highway 61 runs directly past the property and provides straightforward driving to local attractions and neighboring towns.
Regional bus: Arrowhead Transit operates scheduled and demand-response routes in Cook County and offers a service between Grand Marais and Duluth (weekly and/or scheduled days vary seasonally); Jefferson Lines provides intercity bus service to Duluth where passengers can connect to regional services.
Air: Grand Marais/Cook County Airport handles general aviation and charters; the nearest commercial airport is Duluth International Airport (DLH), about 110 miles southwest.
Train: No passenger rail to Grand Marais. Nearest Amtrak service is in the Twin Cities (Saint Paul/Minneapolis), requiring a multi-hour drive or bus/coach connection to Duluth then regional bus to Grand Marais.
Local mobility: Within Grand Marais the town is walkable for downtown, harbor and nearby beaches; taxi and local ride/demand-response services are limited—book in advance for pickups, especially in shoulder and winter seasons.

Maximum occupancy is 4 guests: up to 2 adults and 2 children. We cannot accommodate groups of 3 or more adults.

There is one ring camera located on the parking lot on a tree just to the right of the caboose. This is the only camera we have on site and is used for safety and to verify number of guests.
